2 . CAPE OF GOOD HOPE   Report of the Select Committee on the Saldanha Bay Railway Bill, A6 – ’65

Investigations into the feasibility of constructing a railway line from Hoedjies Bay to meet the existing line between Malmesbury and Piquetberg, via Hopefield. The proposal was made by the Saldanha Bay Harbour and Eastate Co when a Harbour Works Bill was proposed to extend the facilities at the port, which would enable ocean-going vessels to dock there and thus to open up trade with the  Swartland region.. 27 pp plus vii appendix. Investigation into the so-called ‘coloured reserves’, most of which were attached to missions of various denominations. An audit of the value of the Springbok-Port Nolloth railway line and branch lines, its rolling stock, bridgeworks, buildings, workshops, jetty etc, as well as an analysis of traffic on the line. 11 . CAPE OF GOOD HOPE   Letter from the Special Commissioner on the Northern Border, addressed to the Secretary of Native Affairs, reporting the death of Inspector W A Maclean at Kakamas on the 4th of May 1880, A21 – ’80

A tribute by J H Scott, to Maclean, who was active in suppressing the Koranna uprising on the islands in the river, and subsequently chased Malgas and Lukas into the Kalahari desert. A report on the possibility of extending the railway line towards the Cedarberg. Quite feasible until Piquetberg is reached, but the conclusions for the extension towards Clanwilliam are not favourable due to difficult terrain, necessitating a lengthy tunnel or a deviation past de Kruis.. 9 pp with map. photocopy. A complaint by farmers that the Trekvelden situated in the Fraserburg region have been leased out to certain individuals, instead of the use of these lands being licensed to many farmers who would benefit – as was agreed with the Governor in 1848.. 2 pp. photocopy. This time the memorialists complain about the split in the trekvelden, which have been assigned by halves to the divisions of Clanwilliam and Beaufort, and they argue that thei new division should be controlling the trekvelden, as they use them most.. 2 pp. photocopy. 48 . CAPE OF GOOD HOPE   Petition – Hopefield Saldanha and Darling C3 -’59

54 . CAPE OF GOOD HOPE   Return to an Address of the Hon. the House of Assembly to H. E. the Lieut.-Governor dated 23rd May 1860 on the Subject of the granting of Looriesfontein (Loeriesfontein) to the Bastards  A55 -’60

An interesting snippet of history. While some 300 Baster petitoned to have some 4000 morgen awarded to them, having occupied the place for a lengthy period, a number of trekboers countered this with a confused claim that they needed the land as part of the trekvelden. It was finally decided in favour of the Basters, as Sir Harry Smith had promised tenure in 1848 to those who occupied the land which was incorporated in the Cape Colony at that stage.. 11 pp. photocopy. 55 . CAPE OF GOOD HOPE   Papers Connected with the Affairs of the Northern Border of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope  A30 -’80

Voluminous correspondence and reports on the wider ripples of the Koranna war of 1879, which extended into Namibia. The whole northern frontier was in uproar, and the Khoi chiefs Pofadder, Lucas, Christian, Afrikaner and Dirk  Philander were involved with the special commissioner at Kenhardt, J H Scott. The borders of ‘Korannaland’ were defined, Afrikaner’s fiefdom was occupied and ceded to the colony.. 40 pp. photocopy. Cape of Good Hope 1880. #616     

 

56 . CAPE OF GOOD HOPE   Reports of Surveys of the Olifants River conducted by Mr P Fletcher  CE, with the view of ascertaining its Capabilities for the purposes of Navigation and Irrigation  G29 -’60

An in-depth report on water levels, tides etc, taken over two months, a survey of some twenty miles of the river; concluding with doubts as to the suitability as a waterway for transport. A further section of the report deals with the geology and irrigation possibilities for the lower part of the river, which is described in glowing terms and several proposals are made.. 44 pp with sketch map. pbotocopy. 57 . CAPE OF GOOD HOPE   Message to H E the Governor, with Enclosures relative to the Affairs in the North-western Districts of the Colony  A39 -’63

A lengthy report by L Anthing, on the state of the Bushmen in the NW Cape. He starts by investigating the massive decline in their numbers, due to encroachment and extermination tactics by Boers, Basters and Korannas. He is then apprised of murders committed by Bushmen and mounts an expedition to arrest the murderers, in which he succeeds to a large degree, though his sympathies lie with the Bushmen, who seem to be acting out of desperation. His solution is to establish a reserve to house the remnants, while the rest of the land should be assigned to farmers to stabilise the position.. 13 pp. photocopy. The papers relate mainly to the settlement of Gordonia after the Koranna War by Basters. The police force present, was to be pruned and while J H Scott was originally placed at Upington as special commissioner, at the behest of the Basters, though it was later decided to establish a special magistracy at Kenhardt, while Gordonia was incorporated into Bechuanaland Colony.. 18 pp plus map. photocopy. The commissioner also found that prior to the drought, land had been purchased at inflated prices in many parts, and due to this a number of farmers had been ruined when times became difficult. Another chapter in the saga of Loeriesfontein. The white farmers neighbouring on the settlement, have cast envious eyes on the good farming land and grazing, and have requested the cancellation of the ‘Ticket of Occupation’ issued to some 300 Basters in 1860. They claim that original Basters are no longer in possession, those that are do not farm, and that the area is a haven for vagabonds, syphilitics and rustlers. The Civil Commissioner at Calvinia, investigates these claims, finds them lacking in substance in most instances, and with his support, a further ‘Ticket of Occupation’  is issued in 1893 reserving some 9500 acres for the use of the Basters.. 140 pp plus two folding maps. photocopy.
